From Phoenix Magazine 21 Sept. 2007.
THE DUBLINER'S publisher, Trevor White, issued the most obsequious apology to Tiger Woods's wife, Elin Nordegren Woods, in the latest edition of the mag in a forlorn attempt to persuade the couple to withdraw a libel action against the publication. That action was in response to Trevor's 'satirical' effort in publishing the ridiculous claim that Mrs Woods was involved in pornography and which was accompanied with a fake photo of Elin in topless pose.
The apology, which took the form of an editorial in which regret and apology was delivered nine times, was stimulated by the passage of the libel action as it wends its inexorable way through the High Court, having been up for mention more than once and with a hearing likely before Christmas.
If White wants to show real contrition he might also deal with an article written by a Martha Connolly that he published in the same edition as the libelous Woods article. Connolly opined: ''With his inoffensively mild negro features and blonde wife, Tiger Woods has paved the way for darkies.'' And in another aside, Connolly talks of WAGS and golf WAGS under the heading ''SLAGS''.
Connolly's effort at controversial opinion climaxed in the following edition of The Dubliner when she wrote about her ordeal at the hands of a ''big black doctor called Moses'' and how she would prefer to contract cancer than be examined by such a person.
There is little doubt but that Tiger Woods and his wife would have had this deeply racist material drawn to their attention, especially as one of them was published in the same edition that slurred Mrs Woods. And White wonders why he is in trouble with a man whom his mag refers to as a 'darkie'?''
Sports Against Racism Ireland and the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism both condemned the magazine for publishing the article."
